Nairobi, Kenya – tomorrownow.org had the privilege of participating in the “Incorporating Farmer Voice in Kenya’s Digital Transformation Roadmap” event, hosted by 60 Decibels. This insightful gathering brought together innovators and key stakeholders to spotlight the demand and impact of digital services tailored for smallholder farmers.
A central takeaway from the event was the critical need for localized and timely information for smallholder farmers. Organizations working in the agricultural sector must prioritize ensuring that the data they share—whether on weather patterns, market trends, or best farming practices—is actionable and context-specific.
When farmers have access to relevant and localized information, they can make informed decisions that improve productivity, enhance resilience, and bolster their livelihoods. These benefits cascade to strengthen local economies and contribute to greater food security.
Weather Data and Advisory Services: A Game Changer
During the discussions, Salim Kinyimu ICT Director for our last mile partner Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) emphasized the transformative role of weather-triggered and crop-specific advisories. By informing farmers about what, when, how, and where to plant, these advisories empower them to optimize their farming practices in response to climatic variability.
Collaboration is Key to Sustainable Transformation
Achieving these goals requires a collective effort. Stakeholders—including governments, NGOs, tech companies, and farmers themselves—must collaborate to ensure that critical information reaches those who need it most. Building sustainable systems that support food production while protecting the planet demands unified action.
tomorrownow.org is proud to contribute to these collaborative efforts, leveraging partnerships and technology to provide smallholder farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive.
During the “Generating Evidence Session: Lessons from Leaner Impact Assessments” session of the 2023 Edition of the Mercy Corps AgriFin 7th Annual Learning Event, we learnt from the 60 Decibels team about the positive impact of the ongoing tomorrownow.org – KALRO partnership; they showcased results of their Social Impact Measurement Study of our project HORUS, which is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Foundation and is focused on delivering localized weather insights to smallholder farmers in Kenya🇰🇪 via SMS.
In highlight, smallholder farmers who were featured in the social impact measurement study by 60 decibels reported an increase in their yield compared to the previous year, crediting better decision making to the our agroweather advisories that offered guidance on when to plant as well as insights concerning farm-level activities such as pest control.
